A NEW ART FORM: URBAN PRIMITIVE
"Art begins as a question, made manifest through expression, and fulfilled as it becomes a dialogue."
My name is Santos Torres, Jr., for the past seventeen years I have lived in Sacramento, CA. Over the last four decades I have worked across media creatively exploring pastels, oils, acrylic, charcoal, wood, poetry, short stories, fabric, confectionery, beads, leather, glass, ink, and clay. I call my style urban primitive. I create petraglyph artifacts (petra derived from the Greek meaning rock and glyph meaning a symbolic figure or character as in Mayan or Egyptian writing). This artistic style sprang forth through the blending of the ancient with the modern in order to coax out the creation of unique artifacts. Inspired by experience and the materials used, I cultivate an art craft which I hope holds the promise of nuance and transformative meaning reflective of magic, ritual, and diversity.
I see this art form as energetic, mesmerizing, and reminiscent of objects of antiquity. Each artifact is one-of-a-kind, crafted from clay, beautifully hand coloured, sealed, mounted and encased for your enjoyment in an elegant 10x10 inch black wooden shadowbox with a crystal clear glass front. Delivered via FedEx, usually in 3 business days, the art arrives with a mounting bracket already attached for quick and easy display.
A former member of an art collaborative called myStudio based in Sacramento, CA, my work has been exhibited at various locations around the city, including myStudio, Empty Attic, Cafe' Dantorels, the Ancient Future Urban Sanctuary, Bobo Tea, and Evergreen Fine Crafts
